The Meaning of “Kalari”

The word “Kalari” means a training ground, and “Payattu” means practice or combat. But more than a battlefield, the Kalari is a temple of transformation — where students learn respect, focus, and humility. Before every session, practitioners bow to the earth, the guru, and the lineage — honoring the sacred connection between the body and nature.

The Four Pillars of Kalaripayattu

  • 1. Mey Payattu – Body conditioning sequences that develop flexibility, stamina, and awareness.
  • 2. Kolthari – Training with wooden weapons such as the long staff (Kettukari) and short stick (Cheruvadi).
  • 3. Ankathari – Mastery of metal weapons, including sword and shield, dagger, and the legendary flexible sword (Urumi).
  • 4. Verumkai – Empty-hand combat using marma points and precision strikes for self-defense and healing.

These four streams together make Kalaripayattu a complete science of movement — blending strength, balance, and stillness.
